Pre-Travel Random Thought #1

It occurred to me that our geographic view of the world is strongly influenced by a northern hemisphere perspective: But if we took a southern hemisphere perspective things would look very different.

The map of New Zealand from a conventional viewpoint looks like this:

But if we pause a moment and consider how things might have looked if the early map makers were from the southern hemisphere then we might have got used to seeing NZ as....... a boot!

Ready, Steady, Go....

"I see that it is by no means useless to travel, if a man wants to see something new....." (Jules Verne).

After many months of preparation our long planned trip to New Zealand is almost upon us. Just 32 days until departure. Flights have been booked, visas sorted, guide books consulted, hotels, apartments and a camper van reserved.

By the time we return to England we will have completed a circumference of the world in just over 80 days...spending most of our time exploring New Zealand in a camper van.

So what to expect? Our first stop gives us an opportunity to briefly sample the sights and sounds (and tastes) of Hong Kong - location of the cheapest Michelin starred eatery in the world (Tim Ho Wan). Next stop is Sydney where we plan to experience the delights of the harbours, iconic architecture and beaches. Then after another flight we arrive at our main destination - New Zealand! More than 2 months of exploration will take us on a 4000 mile road trip from Auckland to the very top of the North Island (Cape Reinga) before crossing the Cook Strait to the South Island, eventually reaching the most southerly point, Bluff and finishing up in Christchurch.

We should see geysers and glaciers, beaches and vineyards, penguins and possums and much more besides so excitement levels are mounting!

Once we leave New Zealand our final stop will be the multi-cultural metropolis that is Los Angeles...and of course Hollywood!

So, lots of new things to see and do await us. Feel free to follow our travels as we try and share our experiences...and enjoy the journey!
